Ingredients

  • 3 large apples
    1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 cup sugar
    1/4 cup orange juice
    12 Tbsp unsalted butter
    1 large egg
    1 Tbsp lemon juice
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp nutmeg or 1/2 tsp mace
    1/8 tsp cardamom (optional)
    Sparkle sugar for top (optional)

Equipment

  • Large bowl
    8x11" baking dish
    Non-stick spray (or use butter)
    Medium bowl
    Electric mixer
    Whisk

Do-Aheads

  • Peel, core, and chop apples
    Juice orange and lemon, if using fresh fruit
    Set butter out to soften to room temperature
    Preheat oven to 350°
    Spray or butter the baking dish

Additional Notes

Some things you can try for making the brownies chewier:
1. Melt the butter and stir into the sugar rather than creaming them
2. Replace 1/2 of the white sugar with brown sugar
3. Eliminate the baking powder

These were really good when broken up and stirred into homemade cinnamon ice cream!
